CE:NTURY-SCALE SOLAFl VARIABILITY AND THE INSTRUMENTAL TEMPERATURE RECORD

چکیده
Variability of the total solar irradiance (TSI) is a potential contributor to changes in global mean temperature on time scales longer than the relaxation time of the upper ocean (i.e. a few years). Indeed, striking correlations between the global instrumental temperature record, extending back a little more than a century, and observable solar features, most notably the solar cycle length, have led many investigators (e.g. FriisChristensen 1991, Reid 1991 ) to postulate that solar variations may control decade-to-century (Dee-Cen) changes in global mean temperature Ts. In the absence of a convincing physical link between the observed solar features and TSI, however, the role of solar variability in the terrestrial climate record is difficult to quantify. In this study, we examine the implications of some simple physical assumptions regarding solar variability for the way it might affect the instrumental record of T%

Five Millennia of Paleotemperature from Tree-Rings in the Great Basin, USA
The instrumental temperature record is of insufficient length to fully express the natural variability of past temperature. High elevation tree-ring widths from Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva) are a particularly useful proxy to infer temperatures prior to the instrumental record in that the tree-rings are annually dated and extend for millennia. From ring-width measurements integr...
متن کاملLarge-scale Climate Variability and Connections with the Middle East in past Centuries
We analyze reconstructions of large-scale surface temperature patterns in past centuries for insights into long-term climate change in the Middle and Near East. The temperature reconstructions, which have been described in detail previously, are based on calibration of widespread networks of high-resolution proxy and long instrumental/historical records against the 20th century global instrumen...
متن کاملObserved and Simulated Multidecadal Variability in the Northern Hemisphere
Analyses of proxy based reconstructions of surface temperatures during the past 330 years show the existence of a distinct oscillatory mode of variability with an approximate time scale of 70 years. This variability is also seen in instrumental records, although the oscillatory nature of the variability is dicult to assess due to the short length of the instrumental record. The spatial pattern...
متن کاملGlobal and regional variability in marine surface temperatures
The temperature variability simulated by climate models is generally consistent with that observed in instrumental records at the scale of global averages, but further insight can also be obtained from regional analysis of the marine temperature record. A protocol is developed for comparing model simulations to observations that account for observational noise and missing data. General consiste...
متن کاملIs the observed NAO variability during the instrumental record unusual?
[1] Observed multidecadal variability (30 yr runningmeans, trends, and moving standard deviations) of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) during the instrumental record is compared to that simulated by two different coupled general circulation models in extended-range control experiments. Simulated NAO exhibits strong low frequency fluctuations, even on multi-centennial time scale. Observed mu...
